A National Webinar was organised by the Castor Mustard Research Station, S.D. Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar on July 23, 2020 on the topic of “Enhancing Castor Production: Genetic Reformation and Technological Intervention”. Around 200 Faculty members of Agricultural Universities, PG students, seed companies, NGOs and castor industry representatives participated in the webinar. The webinar was started with the welcoming the participants by Dr. S.K. Shah, Assistant Research Scientist, CMRS, SDAU, Sardarkrushinagar. The formal welcome address was given by Dr. R.N. Singh Director of Research, SDAU, Sardarkrushinagar. He underlined the salient feature of the University and research activates of different centers. Besides he also informed the participants about the flow of programme of the webinar.
Hon’ble Vice Chancellor SDAU, Sardarkrushinagar, Dr. R.K. Patel, in his presidential address highlighted the contribution of SDAU for the development of castor hybrids and agro technologies. He also informed that castor has played an important role in the improving the livelihood of the castor growing farmer of Gujarat especially. He informed that the world’s first castor hybrid was released by this University and since than this university has come out with improved hybrids and varieties periodically to meet the challenges. The GCH 7 hybrid of castor has set milestone in the castor production. The castor area, production and productivity have increased significantly after popularization of GCH 7 hybrid among the farmers in Gujarat as well as India.
Dr Sujatha, Principal Scientist, Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research, Hyderabad presented on behalf of Dr AV Reddy, Director, Indian Institute of Oilseed Research, Hyderabad and she informed the participants about the castor scenario in India and the progress made so far and also the ways to increase castor production levels. Dr Ishvar Singh, DEE, Agricultural University, Mandor, Jodhpur described about the castor cultivation technologies to get maximum yield with minimum resources. Dr C. Lavanya, Principal Scientist, IIOR, Hyderabad elaborated on the topic of Castor Productivity Enhancement through New Breeding Techniques.
Dr AG Desai, Research Scientist, (C-M) S.D. Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar discussed in detail about the Major Pest and Disease Challenges to Castor.
Dr DK Patel, Associate Research Scientist, S.D. Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar explained about the Maintenance Breeding and Seed Production of Castor. Sir Abhay Udeshi, Chairman, Jayant Agro-Organics Limited, Mumbai has presented on the topic of Value Addition in Castor: Industrial Perspective. Dr Ajeet Nain, Director of Experiment Station, GBPUAT, Pantnagar delivered on Use of Remote Sensing for Castor Crop Estimation.
Dr A.L. Jat, Asstt. Research Scientist, CMRS, SDAU, Sardarkrushinagar, narrated the Success Stories of Castor Farmers. The webinar was ended with the vote of thanks by Dr G.P. Gangwar, Asstt. Research Scientist, CMRS, SDAU, Sardarkrushinagar.
