Historical Background :

The Chimanbhai Patel College of Agriculture was established as a constituent college of the Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University (Erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University) in June, 1982 in the Primary School building at the University Campus. It was subsequently shifted to the present two storeyed building on December 24, 1991. The formal inauguration of the college was done by Dr. Urmilaben Patel , M.P. and it was named after Late Shri Chimanbhai Patel ( Ex. Chief Minister, Gujarat state ) on October 29,1994.

Objectives :

  • To impart higher education leading to bachelor, master and doctorate degrees in the field of agricultural sciences.
  • To conduct research in various subjects to generate new t~chnologies and to improve productivity and profitability to uplift socio-economic status of farmers.
  • To develop efficient methods of transfer of technology
The Chimanbhai Patel College of Agriculture is located 26 km away from Palanpur Railway Station and 12 km in north from Chandisar which is on Palanpur Kandla National Highway NO.14.lt is situated in main campus of Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University , Sardarkrushinagar in vicinity of college of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandary.

Faculty :

The college has 10 posts of Professor, 27 posts of Associate Professor and 32 posts of Assistant Professors. Apart from this, it has several posts of supporting staff to assist the faculty in imparting farm skills and research. The faculty members are highly qualified teachers with Doctorate in their disciplines and all of them have undergone 2-3 trainings/summer schools to enrich their knowledge and skill.

The college has four lecture halls, two air conditioned conference halls, well equipped U.G. and PG. laboratories, computer laboratory with internet facilities, Tissue culture and biotechnology laboratory, Audiovisual laboratory, Soil and water analysis laboratory, Informative museum of Entomology, Plant pathology, Horticulture and Agronomy, Botanical garden, Agro-meteorological observatory and each department is having overhead projector, cameras, slide projector, multimedia LCD projector to facilitate teaching and research activities. The college is also running a High-tech Horticulture Nursery and a vermiculture and organic farming cell. Over and above this, it has two green houses, two screen houses and one net house. For imparting practical crop production skill, the college has an Agronomy Instructional Farm with 52 ha land with modern tools, crop Cafeteria and a Horticulture Instructional Farm spread over 37.75 ha land with orchards of various fruit crops. The departments are well equipped with various modern scientific equipments like auto analyzer, spectrophotometer for DNA and protein quantification, thermocycler PCR, ultra water purification system, portable photosynthesis system, chlorophyll content index system, phase contrast, microscopes, BOD incubators, deepfreeze, isolation / inoculation chambers, leaf area meter, electronic balances etc.

Library :

The college has its own library with books of various subjects and eight departmental libraries. Over and above this, there is an University Library which has more than 18500 books, 5630 back volumes of research journals, 4000 theses and 4300 reports, many, scientific and research journals, magazines, news papers, reprography, Internet and CD-ROM for retrieval of information.

Education:

The college is running a four years degree programme leading to B.Sc. (Agri.) and have 80 + 20 intake capacity. The medium of instruction is English. The undergraduate syllabus is divided into eight semesters and includes 90 credits of theory and 85 credits of practical. The Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) Programme has been introduced as per the Third Deans Committee. The program was totally revised to develop entrepreneurship among students. The course curriculum of both U.G. and P.G. degree courses are under the process of revision to cater the needs of fast changing agriculture scenario in the light of globalization.

The college has highly trained faculty which are engaged to impart training to the officers, subject matter specialists of Training & Visit scheme and other officers of the state. The college has a Mali (nurseryman) Training Centre. The facilities and expertise is also available to train students from other colleges, institutes etc.

Post Graduate Training :

Most of the faculty members are recognized for P.G.Teaching and majority of them recognized for guiding M.Sc (Agri) or Ph.D. students. College has 50 seats for M.Sc (Agri) and 20 seats for Ph.D. studies, out of which 25 per sent seats are reserved for candidates from other states. The P. G. programme for M.Sc. (Agri) and Ph. D. are available in Agronomy, Plant breeding and Genetics, Horticulture, Agri. Chemistry and Soil Science, Agri. Entomology, Plant Pathology, Agri. Economics, Agri. Extension Education and Agri. Statistics.

There are three hostels for under graduates and two hostels for post graduate students and one hostel for girl students along with dining and recreation hall, Television set, DVD systems solar water heater, water cooler fitted with water purification RO system. A big well maintained play ground with running track, volley ball and basket ball court and cricket ground is located in vicinity of the hostels.

Financial Assistance :

The university offers merit scholarships to under graduate and post graduate students and also girl students. Over and above this, needy students get SC/ST or SEBC scholarships, Merit cum means scholarship and scholarships from some trusts.

Student's Counselling and Placement Cell :

The college has well managed student counseling and placement cell which provide guidance and moral support to the new comers and also arrange campus interview for placement in the government and corporate sector and guide the students for various competitive examinations .

Achivements :

College have turned out 731 B.Sc. (Agri), 440 M.Sc( Agri) and 92 Ph.D students which serve in various government, nongovernment organisations, seed producers, pesticides industries, Banks, NGOs etc. or have their own enterprise .


Student's Amenities :

.• The faculty members have successfully completed three ICAR projects  and ten other agency projects. At present 25 research projects are on hand .

.• The teachers have prepared 15 manuals for practical teaching of various courses .

.• The teachers have published 20 technical bulletins .

.• The teachers have brought out 47 recommendations for farming community on crop husbandry,  crop protection etc. which have helped to increase the production and productivity of various crops of the region.
