The research and development activities on pulses were initiated in Gujarat right with the establishment of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University in 1972 that were later strengthened as Main Pulses Research Station at Sardarkrushinagar. Modest attention was paid on research activities on pulse before that. The activities were braced up in 1979 with implementation of All India Coordinated Research Project on Pulses in the state. Subsequently, the project was partitioned into AICRP on Chickpea, AICRP on Pigeonpea and AICRP on MULLaRP along with elevation of Cess Fund Project on clusterbean to AICRP on Arid legumes. With the establishment of four agricultural universities in the state, Sardarkrushinagar is now catering to the research and development needs of the state for pigeonpea, MULLaRP and arid legumes.
Main Pulses Research Station is located at Sardarkrushinagar that is located 30 km from Palanpur, the district head quarter of district Banaskantha at 240-12' latitude, 720-12' longitude and 154.5 m above the mean sea level altitude. The station is well connected with road (National highway No. 8) and railways (Ahmedabad - Jaipur line). The nearest airport is Ahmedabad that is 170 km from the station. The overall climate is semi-arid. The summers are hot and winters are cool and dry with an annual average rainfall of 500 odd mm.
