Year of establishment      :   1972

The project is being operated under Gujarat Agricultural University since ts inception in the year 1972.  Now under Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada  Agricultural University from 01-05-2004, prior to that it was functioning under the Department of Agriculture. In Gujarat, Cropping System Research Project has one Main Center at Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar and two sub centres at Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh and Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari conducting On Station Research. Experiments on cultivator's filed i.e. OFR is conducted at S.D.A.U, Jagudan and Anand Agricultural University, Vadodara. The state has been divided broadly into eight agro-climatic zones and four agro-ecological zones viz. 2-4-5 and 19. They were demarcated based on the existing climate and cropping             patterns. The principle crops of the state are pearlmillet, groundnut, cotton, rice and wheat and thus the cropping systems are predominately pearlmillet / wheat / groundnut / rice based.  Crop like castor, mustard, groundnut,  sunflower among oil seeds and pigeon pea, blackgram, greengram, chickpea and guar among pulses being the component crops in major cropping systems.

To undertake agronomic research in the country, all India Coordinated Agronomic Research Project was established in 1968 with head quarters at IARI, New Delhi.  The head quarter of the Project was shifted to U.A.S., Bangalore in 1977. In the VII Five Year Plan, the All India Coordinated Agronomic Research             Project was upgraded to the status of Project Directorate for Cropping Systems Research (PDCSR), to strengthen all aspects of research on cropping / farming systems. The head quarter of the PDCSR was located at Modipuram, where it started functioning since 1989. The work of All India Coordinated Project on             Cropping Systems Research and experiments at cultivator's field is carried out through 69 On-stations and On-farm centres in different parts of the country. The project has 25 main centres, 12 sub-centres for under-taking research on     cropping systems and 32 units for conducting experiments on cultivator's field (ECF) covering different agro-climatic regions working through State Agricultural Universities.
