The total area under potato cultivation in Gujarat  is about 35,800 hectares with the total production of 7.80 lacks MT and its average yield was 21.79 MT/ha  during the year 2002-2003. Deesa is one of the most important pocket for potato cultivation in Gujarat where Main Potato Research Station is located.
  • Considering the area under cultivation and agro-climatic conditions for potato research, a centre of All India Co-ordinated Potato Improvement Project, Deesa was initiated in 1971-72, with the financial help of ICAR, New Delhi. Thereafter ICAR realized the need for multidisciplinary long-range research for increasing the production of this valuable crop and  strengthened the project during Fifth Five Year Plan (1975-80) to have systematic research work on potato started to overcome the farmers problems of the state.
  • The research centre is situated at Deesa near Sardarkrushinagar a Principal Campus of Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University .
