- Potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most important rabi vegetable cash crop, which has got an unlimited potentiality of its cultivation in Gujarat State. It may be cultivated both under field and riverbed conditions. Now, since last ten years the riverbed cultivation is not possible due to non availability of river stream. The total area under potato cultivation in Gujarat is about 35,800 hectares with the total production of 7.80 lacks MT and its average yield was 21.79 MT/ha during the year 2002-2003. Deesa is one of the most important pocket for potato cultivation in Gujarat where Main Potato Research Station is located.
- Considering the area under cultivation and agro-climatic conditions for potato research, a centre of All India Co-ordinated Potato Improvement Project, Deesa was initiated in 1971-72, with the financial help of ICAR, New Delhi. Thereafter ICAR realized the need for multidisciplinary long-range research for increasing the production of this valuable crop and strengthened the project during Fifth Five Year Plan (1975-80) to have systematic research work on potato started to overcome the farmers problems of the state.
- The research centre is situated at Deesa near Sardarkrushinagar a Principal Campus of Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University . It falls under the North Gujarat Agroclimatic Zone-IV of the State. It lies at a latitude of 24.50 N and longitude 720 E and at an elevation of 189 M above the Mean Sea Level.
