Historical Perspective :

The college of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry was established on January 17, 1981 in the Press Building of the erstwhile Gujarat Agricultural University. By 1992, the main building of the college was constructed; a two floored building spread over  one hector area. The ground floor consists of departments namely, Veterinary Anatomy, Animal Live Stock Research st;tion Genetics and Breeding, Livestock Production Management, Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, Avian Production Management and Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex beside administrative wing. Other departments' viz. Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, Animal Nutrition, Livestock Products Technology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Microbiology, Animal Biotechnology, Veterinary Public health, Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry and Regional Animal Disease Investigation Centre with well equipped laboratories and the College Library are lodged on the first floor of the building. The Livestock Research Station having Banas Kankrej cow, Mehsani buffalo, Mehsana goat and Patanwadi sheep is aided facility to the college. The college is having Teaching Veterinary Clinical complex at Deesa.

Goals

1.To impart educational,vocational and technical training to develop scientific human resources to preserve animal wealth through developmental & operational animal husbandry activities in the state and nationwide.

1. Developing a strong, competitive and efficient human resource base to cater the developmental, technological and educational needs in the animal husbandry sector.

2. To develop strong, competitive and efficient cutting edge technologies to improve livestock genetic resources to cater the developmental and economical needs in the animal husbandry sector.

3. To Establish linkages between research and extension agencies to ensure economic upliftment of rural masses through Animal Husbandry

Location :

The University is located at Sardarkrushinagar, the main Campus of Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University. Sardarkrushinagar campus is located 27 kms away from Palanpur. Palanpur is the district headquarter of Banaskantha and a broad gauge railway junction on Ahmedabad-Abu road- Delhi railway tract. It is also well connected through state transport bus services. Transport facility from Palanpur to Sardarkrushinagar is provided through a fleet of University buses. The district of Banaskantha is having natural combination of Agricultural land, hills, forests and dry sandy pastures. The fascinating view of the mountain ranges of Ambaji Hills and its surrounding forest adds to its scenic beauty and charm.

Faculty :

Within a short span of 29 years, the College bloomed into a full fledged centre of learning and imparting veterinary education through under graduate, post graduate and doctoral program with 18 departments including an extension wing. A total of 14 professors, 18 associate professors and 34 assistant professors constitute the teaching faculty. In addition, 20 administrative staff, 34supportive technical staff and 59 non-technical staff are working in the college. Moreover a regular qualified and experienced physical instructor is working with the faculty.

Teaching Facilities :

There are four well furnished class rooms which can accommodate 65 students in each room. Besides, two air conditioned examination halls one on each floor with sufficient space to accommodate 100 students, computer laboratory with internet facility, tissue culture and biotechnology laboratory, informative museum of Anatomy, Pathology, Parasitology, Gynaecology and Animal nutrition are the hallmarks. Each department is well equipped with Audio-visual aids like overhead projector, digital camera, slide projector, multimedia, LCD projectors to facilitate teaching and research activities. The classrooms have been equipped with e-teaching facilities. The college also has advanced research instruments like ECG machine, PCR, Real time PCR, BOD incubator, ultra deep freezer, auto haemato and biochemical analyzer, dry chemistry analyzer, phase contrast microscope, inverted microscope, stereo zoom microscope, fluorescent microscope, sonography instrument, HPLC assembly, CCD camera, ELISA reader, photo micro graphic unit, otoscope, C02 incubator, gel documentation system, nano spectrophotometer, portable X-ray machine, metal detector etc. The building has excellent facilities for audio-visual system, air conditioned well furnished seminar hall to accommodate 150 staff members and one air conditioned conference room. The college also has livestock instructional farm, fodder farm, Poultry demonstration unit and Hatchery unit to impart practical training to students. A postmortem complex with modern facilities also exists.

The college has two teaching Veterinary clinical service complexes of which one is attached to college at Sardarkrushinagar and second is located at Deesa. The area of polyclinic at Deesa is spread over two hectors of land having facilities for indoor and outdoor sick animals and is equipped with modern diagnostic instruments and treatment facilities. It has hostel for students and full fledge all clinical departments.

Library :

College has its own library with 2519 books and 1914 magazines and other periodicals for UG, PG students and faculty. In addition,a full fledge central library is available at the University campus.

Education :

The college is running a five years degree programme with rotational six months Library internship training leading to B. V. Sc. & A.H., since 1981 and has intake capacity of fifty students from open merit on the basis of entrance test, ten students from NRI / payment basis plus fifteen percent of total seats for VCI nominees. Post graduate programme leading to M. V. Sc. as well as Doctoral Programme were started since 1984. During the tenure of 29 years 719 B. V. Sc. & A. H., 167 M. V. Sc. and 27 Ph. D. degrees were awarded. At present 339 under graduate level, 60 post graduate level and 5 Doctorate level students are on roll.

Post Graduate Training :

Most of the faculty members are university recognized post graduate guides for M. V. Sc. and/ or Ph. D. degrees. The college is offering PG programmes in almost all disciplines of veterinary and animal science and doctoral programme in some of the disciplines. In addition, one year PG diploma courses in veterinary medicine, veterinary surgery and veterinary gynaecology have also been launched.

Extension :

Under the umbrella of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension, the college has organized 96 animal treatment camps in which 8522 animals were treated. A total of 125 agri fairs/ Exhibitions, 95 group meetings/ khedut shibirs, 06 workshops for Banas Dairy Personnels & Manager, 20 on Campus trainings, 8 off Campus trainings, 55 awareness campaign programmes, 36 recommendations for policy makers, scientific community and farmers, 02 documentaries, 01 night meeting, 150 film shows, 58 study tourlfield trips and 2 Van Mahotsava were also undertaken.

To cater the need of state animal husbandry department, the college runs a certificate course of one year duration for livestock inspectors. The admission is given to 30 students who have cleared SSC. examination with English. So far the training is imparted to 650 livestock inspectors. In addition, 48 refresher ccurses for field Veterinarians were conducted by various departments including Gynaecology, Medicine, Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology Animal husbandry extension and Animal Nutrition. The college also offers training to state veterinarians under continuous veterinary educational programme.

Student Amenities :

At present the hostel accommodation are provided to majority of students at Vanraj (100), Sarabhai (38), Jivraj (108). Narmad (25). Kishan Ghar (32). Girl students are accommodated in the newly constructed Sabarmati Hostel (45).

Financial Assistance :

Various scholarships from state and central government viz., backward class scholarships, minority scholarships, freeships, loan funds, merit scholarships, ICAR. merit scholarships and Bombay gowrakshak mandli scholarship for veterinary etc., are awarded every year.

Student Counseling and Placement :

The facilities are available at the University level which is monitored at the' Directorate of Students'Welfare as well as through the officer Incharge at the college level.

Veterinary graduates of the college get placement in the state department of Animal Husbandry, pharmaceutical companies, allied industry, co-operative dairies, dairy farms, poultry industry, military and paramilitary forces etc. Number of graduates going to higher studies has increased considerably. Our graduates are well placed in foreign countries, where they are practicing the veterinary profession.

Campus interviews are arranged and spot selection of degree holder students are made by reputed co-operative dairies, banks and pharmaceutical companies. Apart from this, they are also employed for job in various government and private sectors in India and abroad and occupying various positions in teaching, research and extension areas.  good number of them reaches to prestigious positions as Dean/Directors, Professors/Head of the departments and administrators etc.

Achivements :

Many faculty members have obtained their Post Graduate degrees under deputation and in-service programmes. The faculty members have received prestigious national awards like Jawaharlal Nehru Award, ICAR team award, Sardar Patel Award, Dr. M. N. Memon memorial medal, Sardar Patel Krushi Award, Young Scientist Award, Dr. K. S. Nair memorial award, Savitri Jibachch Sinha award, Varsha Award, Hari Om Ashram trust Award, Dr. S. K. Ranjan award, Best Teachers award etc.

Several faculty members also received awards for best publication, best oral presentation and best poster presentation instituted by various scientific associations. The staff members have also presented scientific papers in international symposium/ seminar conducted in Canada, UK, South Africa, Japan, Phillipines, and Qatar.

The faculty has honour of being involved in 31 research projects. The college has credit of organizing National seminars. In the span of 29 years college has strengthened HRD by contributing 719 graduates with B. V. Sc. & A. H. degree, 167 post graduates with M. V. Sc. and 27 doctorate with Ph. D. degrees. They are serving in various government as well as non government organizations, pharmaceuticals, nationalized banks, co-operative dairies and different marketing organizations as well as some have their own enterprises.
